Is is a good idea to power parachute/paraglide?
Ok, so I'm nearly 15, and I have a huge interest in recreational flying. I've recently researched and found out about power paragliding and parachuting. I realize there is no age limit, but at what age is a good idea to learn. I plan on taking lessons, and my mom said I can learn before I'm 18, but not right now because she thinks I'm a little clumsy (but not un-careful). My question is, would 16 be an appropriate age to learn, I don't want to go into this being too young, I know the law, but what is your thinking on this. Also, what is the best for me to learn, paraglider or parachute. Both being powered. Also, my mom said: "Ok, but I don't want you real high, only like 200 ft." which is fine with me. Thanks in advance.

16 is a great age to learn flying of any sort if it's legal where you live.
You can get second hand stuff quite safely. Any reasonable guy will let you fly so you know the stuff is OK for you.
It's also a relatively small community and word spreads easy so it's like good bike shops in that way. You won't get a bad deal.
Get some help though from somebody in the know. It's far better to use a bit of experience when you're getting kit. You'll soon get some mates. It's a friendly bunch in flying.
If you fall from 200ft it's not much fun. It's over too quick. And you land too fast if you come straight down.
It's much better to fall from more than 400 feet and have time to slow down on the parachute so you land at a decent speed.
With paragliders you're on a chute anyway, as good as, and you're well strapped in on a comfy padded seat these days.
Like sitting in a flying armchair really, so it only actually matters if you fall out of a plane and have to pull a chute cord.
200 feet is a bit low for falling out of planes. Not a safe height.

Be bold but take care. And get some coordination training. Sports of any kind.
You need some fitness for flying anyway. Good heart and all that. You get medical checks for some kinds of flying.
Paragliders are fun. Easy to learn if you listen OK.
Not really expensive to buy as a means of getting airborne but obviously it's gonna need a bit of dedication and maybe giving up some normal treats.
Learn on an unpowered one first. Then get a motor powered one if you want. It's best to get plenty of experience without the motor.

Right along the cliffs at Miraflores in Lima by the big shopping mall where people at the outdoor bar can gaze in awe at the colourful (yeah I'm English) paragliders whirring along almost close enough to touch.
Of course the air fare is cheaper for you than from UK but it's still a big slice out of buying a chute or a paraglider.
Nice though. Great place. Maybe later.

Here's the local gang. Three miles from home, where I grew up. Great slopes, good view on a fine day, and real gliders in the sky to, so it's fun.
When I'm there. Where I moved to is a bit windy for it. Island living.
